Nominated by President Bill Clinton in 1995 and confirmed to the federal bench in January 1998, after serving as a judge of the Oregon Circuit Court for Lane County from 1992 and, before that, the Oregon District Court for Lane County. Served as Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon from 2009 to 2016 and assumed senior status in December 2023.
