The parents of 17-year-old Martha Odom, who was killed in an April 23, 2026 mass shooting in the food court of the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge, filed a wrongful-death and negligence suit on October 7, 2026 against mall owner Mall of Louisiana LLC, operator Brookfield Properties Retail Inc., and security contractor Marksman Security LLC, alongside the accused shooter. Four other students present during the shooting, two of whom were wounded, joined as plaintiffs.

Why it matters

The suit illustrates the premises-liability exposure commercial landlords and their security vendors face when a mass-violence incident follows a documented history of prior violence at the property; the complaint cites a 2013 food-court disturbance and a 2022 shooting near the mall to argue the risk was foreseeable and that security staffing and screening remained inadequate. It also reflects a broader trend of naming the security contractor as a direct defendant rather than leaving vendor liability to a later indemnification dispute with the landlord.
